The new wastewater biogas plant will generate electricity and thermal load to power DWU’s facilities.

The wastewater biogas-to-energy facility is expected to save the City about $1.5m annually and offset approximately 60% of the electricity that the DWU currently pulls from the grid.

Ameresco said the company invested the capital necessary to treat and deliver up to 1,200 standard cubic feet per minute of biogas to power the plant and the City plans to incorporate future production increases.

DWU selected the company to design, build and operate the facility, which is designed with a capacity to reduce greenhouse gas emissions equivalent of 3,500 passenger vehicles a year or the electricity use equivalent of over 2,500 homes for one year.

Ameresco senior vice president Michael Bakas said the exceptional aspect of this project is the ability to capture waste heat and utilize it, thereby efficiently making use of this renewable resource.

US-based DWU is a wastewater utility which recycle biogas energy.
