Located on the left bank of the Madeira River, the facility is a part of the 3,750MW Jirau project, which secured an operating license from Brazil’s Institute of the Environment and Natural Resources in October 2012.

This new turbine unit, which is the second in Santo Antonio’s Power House II, adds 69.6MW to the plant’s existing 713.5MW capacity, reports the hydroworld.com.

Santo Antonio Energia, the operator of the plant, claimed that another 17 turbines are expected to be operational in 2013.
