ABC cited the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) spokesman Steve Smyth as saying that the company will reduce the number of workers at the Dawson mine due to low coal prices and the high exchange rate.

Union delegates will discuss redundancy packages and entitlement arrangements, in a meeting scheduled to be held within the next few weeks.

Anglo American Dawson mine general manager Aaron Puna said, "The continuing low coal prices have placed considerable pressure on the profitability of the Dawson operation so we will be implementing some necessary changes to address the current financial state of the operation and improve productivity."
