Reuters cited the company spokeswoman as saying that the redundancies will include temporary contract workers will be in addition to 1,500 job cuts announced in 2011.

The company is plans to discuss with trade unions over the jobs cuts, the spokeswoman said.

Areva currently employs 5,100 people in Germany and 45,000 globally.

The company recently reported a record €4.8bn loss in 2014 and announced a restructuring plan.

Meanwhile, French energy services and electrical engineering group Spie said it is considering the acquisition of some of the assets which Areva plans to divest.

In 2015-2017, Areva plans to divest more than €450m worth of assets aimed to improve its balance sheet.
