Bloomberg reported that Areva chief executive officer Luc Oursel told lawmakers at the National Assembly in Paris "If opportunities arise in the future, of course, given Areva’s ambition in renewable energies, we should be ready to study possibilities in this overall deal."

US-based GE is currently in early stage negotiations with Areva and several other French firms regarding asset sales or partnerships.

According to Bloomberg, Oursel said Areva has been in contact with potential buyers of Alstom’s energy units and the negotiations were essentially coordinated by the French government.

Alstom has experienced heavy debts and reduction in orders since last decade and the company was bailed out by the French government in 2004.

In the fiscal year 2012/13, Alstom’s Energy activities registered €14.8bn in sales.
