Battelle Energy Alliance, which manages the INL on behalf of the US Department of Energy (DOE), has awarded the contract worth more than $30m to Areva.
The waste disposal facility will provide additional storage capacity for low-level waste canisters, resulting from the operations of the DOE’s research programs.
In addition to hosting administration and maintenance buildings, the facility will have 225 concrete vaults located 25ft underground to store the canisters.
