The electricity utility has chosen McCarthy Building Cos. to engineer, procure the materials and build the Hyder II Solar Power Plant.

The solar project will include over 71,000 single-axis tracker photovoltaic panels that are expected to generate enough solar energy to power about 3,500 homes in the region.

APS Energy Innovation general manager Barbara Lockwood said this project is the sixth AZ Sun Project for the utility.

"Through the AZ Sun Program, we are adding 200 MW of solar photovoltaic power plants across the state by 2015. We expect that these plants will generate clean energy for at least the next 30 years," Lockwood added.

These projects, which are being designed and constructed by third-party solar firms, will be financed by APS which will also own them.

McCarthy Building Cos. executive vice president Dennis Tucker said, "Hyder II will be the third solar project we have worked on for APS, and we couldn’t be more pleased to work with them again."

Construction on Hyder II is likely to start in April 2012, while commercial operation is expected begin in late 2013.
