A policy framework report was submitted to the state cabinet by the Uranium Mining Implementation Committee, formed in October 2012.
The report said that the current mining regulations are suitable for uranium industry playing down the requirement to form a new legislative framework.
In its report, the committee chaired by Paul Bell concluded that the current mining regulations are suitable for uranium industry playing down the requirement to form a new legislative framework.
Committee chairman Paul Bell suggested that the report outlines the environmental conditions required for the uranium industry in the state.
Bell also added that the uranium industry would offer job opportunities with increase in revenues at low-risk if best practices are followed.
Subsequently Natural Resources and Mines Minister Andrew Cripps has set up an inter-departmental committee to consider the report and its guidelines.
Commenting on the developments Cripps said, "This group will submit a draft report to the Resources Cabinet Committee outlining an implementation strategy for the recommendations, including identification of any budget implications and necessary legislative changes.
"We will also establish a Uranium Mining Stakeholder Committee comprising representatives from local governments, Indigenous groups, industry, environment and natural resource management groups in accordance with the report’s recommendations," added Cripps.
