Construction of several onshore wind farms, totaling about 1.9GW energy, has been postponed for over two years due to radar related planning conditions as turbines can reflect radar waves and appear as clutter on the display screens.

About 600MW of wind farms in the 20-30 mile proximity to civil airports are currently on hold due to the lack of clearence.

Cambridge Airport director Archie Garden revealed that the long range detection technology will be tested at the nearby Wadlow Wind Farm by tracking the overhead flying aircraft.

"Wind turbine clutter is a pressing issue for the aviation industry and we are pleased to play a part in addressing it through supporting Aveillant’s extremely promising technology," Garden said.

Though the current deployment at Cambridge Airport is Aveillant’s ‘special partnership’ with the airport, developers are expected to sign a long-term service agreement in the future to pay for the technology.
