The UK government’s Technology Strategy Board is funding the GBP1m project, which is aimed at supporting the development of the commercial production of Aquamarine’s Oyster wave energy converter. As a matching grant, BAE and Aquamarine are pooling up GBP450,000 for the project.

According to the group, the device moves backwards and forwards in the waves to pump high pressure water onshore to drive a turbine that generates electricity for the National Grid.

In an effort to bring down the cost of the device and help to boost energy production, BAE will work to develop systems that support the device, which has already been tested at the European Marine Energy Centre in Orkney.
