The new power plant will house two nuclear reactors having 1,000MW capacity each and are estimated to value about $2bn each.

As part of the contract signed with the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission in 2011, Russia’s Rosatom will design and build the reactors at the plant.

The plant is scheduled to be completed by 2020, while its first phase is expected to generate about 1,000MW of energy by 2018.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said, "It is my belief that the Russian Federation will follow international standards in every stage of the Rooppur NPP implementation and provide Bangladesh with a technology that would operate safely and effectively under any climatic condition."

Under the deal signed with Bangladesh, Russia will not only built but also operate and provide fuel for the plant as well as provide funding of about $10bn for its construction.

In 2007, the International Atomic Energy Association (IAEA) had granted approval for construction of the nuclear power plant, which is expected to feature third generation technology and five layers of security.
