BARC director of remote handling and robotics and design, manufacturing and automation group Manjit Singh said the automation system aims to transfer fuel bundles directly from fuel handling area of storage pool to the dissolver cell without the use of a charging cask.

"This contributes in eliminating dependency on skilled man-power and thus reduction of man-rem (radiation dose) consumption by workers," Singh added.

BARC Safety Council has reviewed and approved a preliminary safety analysis report (PSAR), reports Times of India.

The center will install the first automated system for spent fuel nuclear reprocessing plant at Tarapur in Maharashtra and has commenced the preliminary work for this installation.
