The new switchgear equipment has been designed to enhance safety and reduce greenhouse gas emissions at the facility while replacing 37-year-old equipment.
The 500kW switchgear equipment will transfer electricity from Mica’s generating units, which are located 183m underground to above-ground transmission lines.
The project replaced aging 37-year-old switchgear equipment, which has been in use ever since the Mica powerhouse was constructed in the 1970s, with new equipment required for the two new generating units that are currently under construction.
During construction from 2009 to 2014, the project created nearly 1.5 million person hours of temporary work.
