The utility said output was down 4% in Q1-’09-10 due to reduced inflows (down 15% from last time) to reservoirs due to a relatively dry Spring season and less snow-pack. The inflows in the quarter were 11% down on average, taken over 1971-2000. The full year forecast is for inflows to be approximately 93% of average.
BC Hydro has moved to conserve reservoir storage volumes by taking advantage of cheaper electricity market prices, which is the reverse of the situation faced in Q1-’08-09.
Work to address the turbine failure at unit No 3 at GM Shrum was completed in May, during the quarter.
Revenues for the utility were down in the quarter, too, due mainly to reduced demand from industry due to the weakening economy. Demand is down in particular from the pulp and paper sector.
The last full year, ended 31 March, saw hydro generation down 14%.
