The company said that the energy storage plant will provide an essential grid-stabilizing service known as frequency regulation by recycling electricity to balance its supply and demand on a moment-to-moment basis.

In addition to the $5m state grant, the $53m Hazle Township facility was also awarded a $24m smart grid stimulus grant from the US Department of Energy.

The company recently completed construction of its first 20MW flywheel frequency regulation plant in Stephentown, New York, and is now operating this facility.
