The fourth and the only remaining coal-fired plant will be shut down next year.

Guohua Electric Power-owned 400MW thermal power plant closed on Friday will be replaced with a gas-fired plant. A 93-year-old plant run by Beijing Energy Investment Group in western Beijing was shut down a day before.

The move is in line with the city’s strategy to cut down pollution by shutting down the four major coal-fired power plants in the region.

The closure of the four plants is expected to reduce close to 10,000t of sulfur dioxide, 19,000t of nitric oxide and 3,000t of dust annually.

Under the clean air action plan, Beijing plans to reduce its coal consumption by 13 million tonnes a year by the end of 2017.
