EEW Energy from Waste operates 18 energy-from-waste plants, which generate electricity, steam and heat from waste.
The plants had a total waste treatment volume of approximately 4.4 million tons in 2015. They are capable of generating close to 1,900GW of electricity and 3,000GW of heat from waste every year, The Wall Street Journal reported.
EEW Energy from Waste said that it uses energy contained within waste and generate process steam for industrial companies, district heating for residential areas and environmentally compatible electricity for approximately 700,000 households.
The acquisition is expected to be completed by the end of this month, upon receiving clearance in accordance with the German Foreign Trade and Payments Regulation in the form of a certificate of non-objection.
EQT Partners partner Matthias Fackler was quoted by Bloomberg as saying: "We had huge demand by investors from that region because the best way to cope with growth in waste is by having some engineering expertise from one of the market leaders in Europe."
In 2013, EQT Partners acquired a 51% stake in EEW from Germany’s EON. The remaining 49% was acquired by EQT after EON announced a restructuring plan.
According to the figures released by World Bank in 2012, China surpassed the US in municipal solid waste generation.
