Under the Rs27.5bn ($406.4m) contract, Bhel will be responsible for designing, engineering, manufacturing, supply, erection, commissioning and civil works for the main plant package.
The firm will manufacture key equipment for the contract at its facilities located in Tiruchi, Haridwar, Bhopal, Ranipet, Hyderabad, Jhansi and Bangalore.
Additionally, the company’s power sector-southern region will be responsible for civil works and erection/commissioning of the equipment.
Located in Thiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu, the North Chennai stage III project is expected to provide easy access to electricity to the people of Tamil Nadu.
The project, which is scheduled to be commissioned by August 2019, will represent the first 800MW supercritical set based power plant in the state.
Earlier, Bhel commissioned two 600MW units in 2013 at North Chennai thermal power station, comprising in-house designed steam turbines. The power plant marked the first of their kind for both the firm and the state.
In 2014, TANGEDCO selected Bhel to develop a 2x660MW coal-fired supercritical thermal power project at Ennore SEZ in Tamil Nadu, a southern state in India, on engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) basis.
