The bioWAVE ocean wave energy system provides advantages including maximum efficiency, low-cost installation, unique survivability, convenient servicing and minimal impact.

The project is being funded by BioPower Systems as well as by the Australian Government, the Victorian Government.

BioPower Systems CEO Dr Timothy Finnigan said: "All of the mechanical and electrical components have already been designed, built and tested. The design of the bioWAVE structure and its foundation demanded a high level of skill and ingenuity. We had to overcome some challenges, but the final design is now complete."

The bioWAVE will feature a 250kW O-Drive module to enable conversion of irregular hydraulic power into on-grid electricity. The project is currently planned for construction during 2014 and installation is scheduled to commence in the ocean in 2015.

WorleyParsons CEO Andrew Wood said: "The bioWAVE is a promising ocean energy technology, with wide-ranging applicability for extracting clean energy from the coastal ocean, but it must be engineered with both cost and performance in mind."
