The center’s first research project will look to explore opportunities to refine waste cooking oil into sustainable aviation bio-fuel.

Jointly funded by Boeing and COMAC, the technology center will work with Chinese universities and research centers to expand its know-how on sustainable aviation bio-fuels, reducing carbon emissions and air traffic management to improve efficiency in commercial aviation.

Boeing China president Marc Allen said that the issues of sustainable fuels, carbon emission reduction etc cannot be solved by a single company and therefore has necessitated the partnership.

COMAC vice president Shi Jianzhong added, "Energy conservation emission reduction has currently become the hotspot and focus of the global aviation sector, and our collaboration with Boeing in this regard will have profound impacts in China as well as the world."

The research center will be located at COMAC’s new Beijing Aeronautical Science and Technology Research Institute.

Boeing vice president for research & technology in China Dong Yang Wu concluded saying, "We are excited about opportunities to partner with world-class research capabilities in China in ways that will accelerate the global push for renewable jet fuels and support commercial aviation’s growth while reducing its environmental footprint."
