The 8-year maturity loan from NIB, which offers financing to the energy, environmental, transport, logistics and communications sectors for environmentally sustainable and competitive projects, will help Boliden treble the capacity of the plant to process 120,000 tonnes of electronic scrap per year.

Boliden’s Ronnskar smelter treats e-scrap to extract metals from the e-waste, including copper, zinc and other precious minerals, providing a less energy intensive process than extracting metals from ore.

NIB President and CEO Johnny Akerholm said that by financing this project, NIB helps to ensure that more electronic scrap is recycled, rather than sent to landfills, and that with this expansion, Boliden can handle more of the ever-growing mountain of electronic scrap.
