The company will employ these funds to develop an oxygen sensor that measures the oxygen concentration in the intake manifold to accurately determine the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) percentage.

The EGR measurement serves to improve engine efficiency, reduce fuel consumption and maintains or reduces exhaust emission for conventional engines.

Bosch will develop the sensor along with Clemson’s International Center for Automotive Research and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Robert Bosch gasoline systems division president Sujit Jain said, "We are pleased that the Department of Energy has selected Bosch to lead this collaborative effort to solve the technical challenges associated with highly efficient combustion concepts and we are committed to even further improvements in the transportation sector."
