Covering a total area of 1,357km², the licenses (PL206-210/2014) will be explored under the ongoing joint venture between Botswana Diamonds and Russian diamond producer Alrosa, which identified the area as a high priority.

The licences, PL 206/2014 and PL 208/2014, had posed exploration challenges due to sand depth and swamp conditions.

The parties are already carrying out work on PL117/2011 license in the Orapa area where two drill targets have been identified and mineralogical analysis of the samples is underway in Russia.

Botswana Diamonds chairman John Teeling said: "The new licence awards are important to Botswana Diamonds. We did not have rights over some of the targets identified by Alrosa.

"We now have some of the top targets on our licences."

"We have a joint budget of $1 million for 2014. We have funding for it."
