Power generated from the solar plant will be used by copper mines which are being developed in the northwestern region.

The state-owned Daily News quoted the government as saying in a notice: "This invitation … is a request for expression of interest to construct, operate, maintain and decommission at the end of its economic life, a scalable solar power plant."

Details of the power plant capacity remain undisclosed.

Previously, the country’s minerals and energy ministry said the country intends to issue tenders for the construction of 100MW solar power plants. Power from these plants would be equally divided between Jwaneng and the north-west mines.

The Jwaneng diamond mine is operated by De Beers and the Botswana Government joint venture company, Debswana.

Recently, Botswana state majority owned exploration company, Shumba Coal said it plans to develop a 200MW solar power plant to help ease power crises in the country.
