Under the terms of the agreement, BP will supply the natural gas from its portfolio of LNG sources, to Kansai Electric for over 23 years.

The two firms have also entered into cooperation agreement to jointly explore opportunities across LNG business, including trading, and optimization of LNG ship operations.

BP integrated supply and trading CEO Paul Reed said: "Building on a separate LNG sale and purchase agreement signed in 2013, this new LNG deal entails additional supply from BP’s portfolio.

"We are very pleased that Kansai Electric and BP have agreed this expanded LNG business and we look forward to working together to explore areas of further cooperation."

BP participates in LNG projects spread across Australia, UAE, Indonesia, Egypt, Trinidad and Angola.
