The KG D6 block is a gas field located in the Krishna and Godavari river basins in the state of Andhra Pradesh.

Under the KG D6 block enhancement plan, the companies will invest in a number of projects to develop the four trillion cubic feet of discovered natural gas resources from the block.

Gas produced from the projects is expected to reduce the dependency of India on imports and provide energy to millions of Indians.

Reliance Industries chairman and managing director Mukesh Ambani said the partnership will concentrate more on finding more
hydrocarbons and address the geological complexities along the east coast of India.

"We hope to significantly contribute to India’s domestic production and help the country attain energy security," Ambani added.

Implementing the KG D6 block enhancement plan would require advanced skills, technologies and processes to produce gas from water depths of over 1,500m.

BP Group chief executive Bob Dudley said, "We will bring all our expertise in deep water to explore the prolific gas basins in India and BP looks forward to a rewarding and successful exploration programme in the coming years."

RIL and BP formed a 50% joint venture called India Gas Solutions in 2011. BP purchased 30% interest in multiple oil and gas blocks in India including KG D6 block.
