“British Columbia’s alternative energy and biofuel sectors are becoming world-leaders in pioneering cutting-edge clean, green technology,” said Premier Gordon Campbell. “By focusing on leading-edge technology, we’re supporting the creation of good jobs in communities across the province, building a home-grown clean energy sector that will market proven innovations to the world, and helping meet the growing demand for green power here in B.C.”

In Ucluelet, the provincial government is providing $2 million towards a four-megawatt ocean-wave energy demonstration project, which is the product of a partnership between Pacific Coastal Wave Energy Corp. and the District of Ucluelet.

To be situated offshore, the technology will be attached to the seabed. Submerged buoys will confine the ocean’s kinetic energy. The total project is worth $20 million.

In Tofino, the provincial government will provide $2 million towards an ocean-wave energy project developed by SyncWave Systems Inc. The project will convert the energy of ocean swells to clean, renewable energy and is worth $10,475,000.

Meantime, the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation will obtain $750,000 for a geo-thermal energy project that will heat buildings and domestic hot water in the Ty-Hystanis New Community’s 160-lot subdivision. The 160-lots will be home to 215 new housing units. The total project value is worth $3 million. Totally the provincial government is providing out $32.6 million for projects in 30 communities.
