British Energy had only recently received permission to restart the 485MW Hunterston reactor from the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate, after it was shut down for maintenance work and repairs to damaged pipes, the BBC said.

According to Hemscott, the B-7 reactor was shut down on June 10, 2007, so that engineers could look into the equipment issues. However, a spokesman for the company maintained that the measure was precautionary and that there were no concerns over safety.

The publication reported the company spokesman as saying that British Energy would carry out any required work before restarting the reactor, although he could not say when this would be.

Hemscott also reported that one of the reactors at British Energy’s Heysham nuclear plant was shut down on June 10, 2007, for refueling and maintenance.
