The companies have signed definitive agreements for the license of the Butamax technology, which is an integral part of a full retrofit to biobutanol production and can also be installed independently as a first phase of the conversion. Commercial operation of the project is set for winter 2013.

Fagen will be responsible for engineering, procurement, and construction of the project as part of an agreement with Butamax and its vision for rollout of its full biobutanol production technology.

Butamax CEO Paul Beckwith said that the companies have partnered to draft a strategy to provide the new technology to improve current biofuel production and provide better co-product profiles.
