NextEra intends to build the 485MW project on federal public land controlled by the Bureau of Land Management.

The presiding member of the committee reviewing the Blythe project commissioner Karen Douglas was quoted by Reuters as saying that "the project will spur California’s transition to renewable energy and help advance its aggressive climate change goals."

In December 2013, the committee reviewing Blythe said the project may have "environmental impacts that are cumulatively significant when considered along with the impacts of other projects in the region."

NextEra spokesman Steve Stengel said the company is still seeking the US Bureau of Land Management’s approvals for the project and is also looking for a firm to buy the power from the planned project.

The Energy Commission approved the 1,000MWBlythe solar project for a site situated about eight mile in eastern Riverside County on 7,043 acres of federal public land in September 2010.
