The research group consist of Reykjavik Energy, University of Iceland, CNRS in Toulouse and Columbia University in New York.

The $10m project will assess the viability of storing carbon pollution underground by artificially creating seams of limestone.

Reykjavik Energy will fund half of the project and the remaining funds will be provided by the University of Iceland, Columbia University (USA), France’s National Centre of Scientific Research, the US Energy Department, the EU and Scandinavian funds.

The project differs from other carbon storage projects as it turns the CO2 into rock, preventing its escape back into the atmosphere, reports Industrial fuels and power.
