The units will produce 400,000t of styrene monomer a year using CB&I’s ethylbenzene (EB) and styrene (SM) technologies.

Use advanced catalysts, the EB/SM technologies help minimize operating costs.

Carbon Holdings chairman and CEO Basil El-Baz said: "This EB/SM plant represents Carbon Holding’s ongoing confidence in the Egyptian economy and in the tremendous potential of the downstream petrochemical sector.

"The styrene from this plant will be used domestically for the production of synthetic rubber and advanced plastics for Egyptian consumer products, offsetting costly imports."

Earlier this year, CB&I secured a contract to provide license and design a polypropylene unit at the complex.

Planned to be built within the Ain Sokhna industrial zone, the Tahrir complex is scheduled to be commissioned in 2019.
