The contract follows pre-filing process permit from the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to NextDecade in late March.

CB&I will perform design and engineer activities for the full FERC permitting process, and procurement of critical equipment.

Work under the contract is subject to the approval of project construction from the FERC and related agencies.

Planned to commence in 2017, the phased construction of Rio Grande is expected to generate around 5,000 jobs. The first phase of the project will require approximately $8bn.

Located on a 1,000-acre site along the northern shore of the Brownsville Shipping Channel, Rio Grande will be supplied with feed-gas from the proposed 140-mile Rio Bravo Pipeline. It will feature up to six liquefaction trains with each expected to produce 4.5 million tons of LNG a year.

Special purpose entities Rio Grande LNG and Rio Bravo Pipeline will develop and operate the terminal and pipeline.
