As per the terms of the contract, the next one year will see Clean Energy working on reconfiguring and upgrading CNG station compressor equipment at Metro stations that supply CNG bus fleets deployed in the agency’s Los Angeles Central and South Bay divisions.

The CNG fuel requirement for bus fleets operating at these two divisions is expected to exceed nine million gallons per year.

Metro, which currently operates more than 2,500 CNG buses, which comprise 95% of its overall fleet, has secured grant funding from the federal program created by the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for this CNG station upgrade project.

Compared to conventional diesel buses, natural gas-powered transit buses are claimed to produce less harmful air pollutants and emit less greenhouse gas.

James Harger, chief marketing officer of Clean Energy, said: “We are pleased to be selected by Metro and expand our working relationship with them to support their operation of the nation’s largest clean-air bus fleet.

“Across America, Clean Energy is partnering with many major public transit agencies and their service providers to fuel over 5,000 buses, and to help them implement and expand their clean-fuel programs.”
