The CNY7bn ($1.1bn) project forms a part of the country’s initiative to quadruple its desalination capacity by 2020, Bloomberg reported.

China plans to produce 807 million gallons of treated water a day, under the government’s Special Plan for Seawater Utilization as the country is suffering limited rainfall and declining water resources.

Around 400 of the 668 large cities in the country suffer due to water scarcity.

An additional CNY10bn ($1.36bn) will be invested for laying up the Beijing pipeline.

The desalination plant is being built and will be operated by Aqualyng China, which is a venture between Norway’s Aqualyng and Hong Kong-based Beijing Enterprises Water Group.

When operational in 2019, the Bohai Bay plant will be capable of treating 120,000 tons of seawater everyday.
