Located in Sichuan’s Ganzi Tibetan autonomous prefecture, the 3GW hydropower station will have a total reservoir capacity of 10.8 billion cubic meters, reports Xinhua news agency.

The power station’s first generator is scheduled to enter into service at the end of 2021 whereas the entire station will be completed in 2023, according to Press Trust of India.

Till date, China has built about 23 dams of different sizes on the same river.

The country is also planning to build huge dams over the Brahmaputra river in Tibet, which has raised concerns in India.

According to the news agency, State Development and Investment Corporation’s subsidiary is responsible for the construction and management of the new hydropower station over Yalong River.

The hydropower station will supply electric power to China’s southwest regions as well as eastern areas.
