Shanxi Yang Quan Coal Industry (Group) Co. Ltd. has commissioned a new coal mine methane power plant featuring four GE Jenbacher gas engines in Shentangzui, Shanxi Province, China.

The plant uses methane gas piped several kilometres from an active coal mine and supplies power generated to the local grid. The plant was developed as a Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project as it will prevent methane – a powerful greenhouse gas – escaping to the atmosphere.

The new Shentangzui power plant features four of Jenbacher’s JGS 620 GS-S.L. engines, with an electrical output of 3.044 MW each and an electrical efficiency of 40.6 per cent. Coal mine methane power plants are usually located at the mine site.

“Given China’s role as the world’s leading coal-producing country, we are pleased to cooperate with Shanxi Yang Quan Coal Industry Group on this milestone project between our companies as China continues its efforts on curtailing industrial emissions by increasing the utilization of alternative energy sources, including methane gas from active coal mines,” said Prady Iyyanki, CEO of GE Energy’s Jenbacher gas engines division.

Coal mine methane projects are becoming increasingly popular in coal-producing countries such as China and Australia, according to GE.
