The move comes as the company seeks to reactivate the reactor at an early time, Jiji Press reports citing informed sources.

The checks are scheduled to be conducted under NRA’s new nuclear plant safety standards, which were compiled in 2013, in the wake of the nuclear accident at the Tokyo Electric Power Company’s (TEPCO) Fukushima 1 nuclear reactor in 2011.

Chubu Electric had suspended operations at Hamaoka’s 3 to 5 reactors in May 2011 at the request of then Prime Minister Naoto Kan, who directed the company to take sufficient measures against tsunami at the plant in preparation for an undersea quake, which is expected to hit areas including Shizuoka Prefecture in future.

The Fukushima incident led to suspension of all Japanese nuclear power reactors, which are required to clear the NRA’s safety checks before resuming operations.
