Revere’s sanitary sewers overflowed on numerous occasions, discharging untreated wastewater from its collection system to rivers, creeks and brooks and raw sewage from its storm sewer system to those waters.

Under the settlement with the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (Mass DEP), Revere will upgrade its wastewater collection system and storm sewer system to eliminate the threat of untreated sewage discharges.

Revere will also implement a system-wide 12-year plan to prevent sanitary sewer overflows that are associated with insufficient capacity of its wastewater collection system.

In addition, Revere will also ensure that its separate storm sewer system is prevented from discharging raw sewer that contribute to the violations of water quality standards.

Mass DEP commissioner, Laurie Burt, said that by undertaking a comprehensive approach that over time will eliminate the threat of untreated sewage discharges, the city of Revere has chosen to take the responsible path forward to protect public health and safety.
