“With discoveries in Sudan, Uganda and Tanzania, we believe that Kenya is now standing at the door,” said Murungi, referring to three countries that neighbor Kenya. “It’s only a matter of time.”

Mwendia Nyaga, managing director of National Oil Corporation of Kenya said that, CNOOC will possibly invest upto $20 million for the six month drilling operation starting about October 28, 2009 at Bogal 1-1 well.

Over the last three years, CNOOC invested about $15 million to collect data and analyze it.

“From the seismic data they’ve collected, and by reviewing the existing information, they’ve found the right structures for hydrocarbons,” Nyaga said.

CNOOC also has a second exploration license in Kenya for the L2 Block, an inland area in the country’s east in the Lamu basin, he said.
