Effective from 30 August 2013, the Makhado project received environmental authorization in terms of National Environmental Management (NEMA) (Act No 107 of 1998) and the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations (2010).

CoAL executive chairman David Brown said that the company will continue to engage with all stakeholders to ensure the responsible development of the Makhado project.

"We welcome the decision by LEDET, which is a further step towards achieving full regulatory compliance for the Makhado Project, and enabling meaningful contribution to the socio-economic transformation of the Limpopo Province," Brown added.

The Makhado project will commence production by the end of 2016 and produce 2.3 million tonnes of coking coal and 3.2 million tonnes of thermal coal per annum.

According to CoAL, the project will reduce the import of raw materials needed every year to meet the requirements of the country’s steel industry.
