The Grand Prairie Gateway transmission line, which will extend nearly 70 miles through northern Illinois, is a part of PJM’s regional transmission expansion plan which was earlier approved by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

ComEd is a member of the PJM Regional Transmission Organization.

The transmission line would increase transmission capability, reduce transmission congestion in the region, cut carbon emissions by nearly half a million tons as well as reduce retail electricity costs to ComEd customers.

The Grand Prairie Gateway project construction is estimated at about $251m and the construction is scheduled to commence in mid-2015.

The PJM’s Regional Transmission Expansion Plan (RTEP) aimed to determine transmission system enhancements which could provide steady electricity to more than 61 million people throughout 13 states and the district of Columbia.
