The move is said to be part of the efforts made by the municipality to create a healthy and safe environment, and its endeavour to devote efforts in developing and implementing efficient and effective solutions to achieve sustainable management of waste in the emirate of Dubai, based on the Local Order No 11 of 2003 on public health and safety of the community.

According to Hassan Makki, director of Waste Management Department at the municipality, non-compliance with the directives could lead to legal sanctions and different administrative procedures, including fines, and cancelling business license and closure of the violating establishment.

In order to ensure an integrated waste management system, the municipality has formulated laws and legislations for the management of various waste issues and issues of hygiene, which is a set of local orders pertaining to public health and community safety, and technical guidelines and practice manual.

In the area of waste and hygiene management, the municipality provides services including waste collection and sanitation services and supervision of all companies operating in the waste treatment activities, waste recycling and the issuance of permits to this activity.

It also provides support and encouragement in the area of waste reduction in all sectors of society, and implementation and participation in voluntary environmental campaigns.
