The public utility said that the shutdown of the plant is expected to begin in the beginning of 2015 or later.
Located on a 300-acre site on the Muskegon River in Michigan, the coal-fired plant generated enough electricity to power 200,000 homes.
The 65 year old plant had five coal units, but three of them were converted to gas fired units. Only unit 5 and 6 are coal-fired.
Consumers Energy is planning to shut down the facility owing to stringent environment regulations.
The company announced that closing down the plant is more feasible than upgrading it to meet the high standards of the emission of mercury, nitrogen dioxide, and particulates into the environment.
