The production figures represents a growth of 400% compared when compared to 2,694 tonnes coal produced in the previous month.
Export sales from the Penumbra coal mine totaled 5,212 tonnes over the month as compared to 854 tonnes in December 2012.
Continental Coal estimates coal production of 20,000 tonnes-25,000 tonnes in February.
The mine is expected to produce a total of 750,000 tonnes per annum of ROM coal over the initial 10 year mine life.
"Penumbra Coal Mine development remains on schedule to be completed within the approved ZAR328m budget and with no identified cost overruns," the company stated.
The company has also witnessed strong performance over the month at its other two mines – Ferreira coal mine and Vlakvarkfontein coal mine.
Ferreira recorded ROM coal production of 56,886 tonnes over the period, a growth of 12% as compared to production in December 2012.
Meanwhile, the monthly coal production at Vlakvarkfontein totaled 103,751 tonnes.
