The Cook Nuclear Plant is owned and operated by American Electric Power (AEP).
During the 30-day, the Unit 1 saw reactor refueling, regular maintenance, testing work and several Life Cycle Management (LCM) projects.
AEP senior vice president and chief nuclear officer Larry Weber said: "The combination of shorter refueling outages and Cook’s very reliable past operation strengthens our position in the industry and demonstrates the benefits we provide to our customers and shareholders."
The Cook power plant had secured the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission’ (NRC) license renewals in 2005 to allow its two units to operate to 2034 and 2037 respectively, an additional 20 years beyond their original licenses.
The Cook Unit 1 is now also fully compliant with the NRC’s all upgrades and modifications as a result of the Fukushima nuclear accident in Japan.
Meanwhile, the Cook Unit 2, which also completed the last two fuel cycles at full capacity, had maintained 100% power during the refueling.
The 1,030-net MW Unit 1 and 1,077-net MW Unit 2 can jointly produce enough electricity for more than one and one half million average homes, at full capacity.
