With the completion of trial operations of the latest unit, which represents the fourth unit of Xiluodu’s left bank, the station’s total capacity added for right and left banks reached 9,240MW in 2013.

The project calls for the construction of a dam, an underground power generation unit and a flood discharge structure; and will feature 18 Francis turbine-generators of 770MW each and an air-cooled generator with 855.6MVA output.

To be fully operational by June 2014, the project is claimed to be the third biggest hydroelectric power plant in the world.

Once operational, the Xiluodu plant will generate 64 billion kWh of electricity annually and is expected to offset approximately 150m tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year.
