Diesel engine maker Cummins has cancelled development of a new truck engine, an environmentally friendly version of its ISX engine, and plans to lay off 500 workers as part of a plan to boost profits by reducing costs. The moves are expected to save $150 million in two years which will be used to pay off existing debt faster and help finance investment in what the company sees as growth opportunities in its power generation and filtration businesses.
