Located in Busaana sub-county, Kayunga district at Koova Island, the project will feature four 45.8MW Kaplan hydro turbines and a 132kV power transmission line connecting it to Bujagali.

Earlier in July 2013, CWE had secured a contract to construct the $500m project, which is being funded by the China Export and Import Bank. Construction of the project is expected to take around 34 months.

Once operational, the project, which is likely to generate 1,039GWh of electricity annually at 68 cents per kWh, will increase the total electricity installed in the country by 23%.

Ugandan Minister of Energy and Mineral Development Irene Muloni said that the project will offer benefits to both Kamuli and Kayunga districts in the form of creating jobs and using local construction materials as well as delivering clean electricity.
