Departments of Energy and Interior selected 16 projects in 11 states to develop sustainable hydropower technology.

All the projects will use the funding to enhance sustainable renewable generation from small hydropower resources, environmental performance of hydropower.

The projects will also enhance cost-effective technologies for hydropower development at low-head sites such as irrigation canals and non-powered dams, and spur deployment of pumped storage hydropower.

DOE secretary Steven Chu said hydropower can be used to store energy to help utilities better integrate other sources of renewable energy like wind and solar into the grid, improving our energy security and diversifying our clean energy resources.
